With the COVID pandemic the world shifted considerably on its axis and the role of health and care practitioners came more sharply into focus. Whilst the world battled the effects and impact of COVID, dedicated health and care professionals delivered incredible frontline services and care to their communities and also in some cases took on new roles and responsibilities in the areas of research and innovation.

This exhibition showcased the work of practitioners in the fields of health and care research across the North West of England. It aimed to demonstrate their ability to find new ways to problem solve and create solutions through research and innovation activities over 2020-2022. The exhibits and live events programme have brought together organisations who champion and support this work and explore what innovation and creativity really looks like in practice.

Watch the session led by Professor Lucy Bray on her project Rights-based standards for children undergoing a clinical procedure. Lucy works as a Professor in Child Health Literacy in the Faculty of Health, Social Care and Medicine at Edge Hill University. Her work explores how children and young people can be provided with information in a meaningful and timely way through ISUPPORT. Discover the importance of the role of mentor/coach and supervisors in health and care research. This session was hosted by Professor Ian Jones from Liverpool John Moores University. Ian is a senior cardiac nurse and academic with over 30 years clinical experience. He was appointed to LJMU in 2016 and became the Associate Dean for Research and Knowledge Exchange in the Faculty of Health in 2017. Watch this recorded session.

A series of Provocations workshops featured in the Gallery and Live Programme for EXPO 2022. The Provocations series is a collaboration between the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences at the University of Liverpool and NHS R&D North West. The series brought cutting edge research from across the Faculty to a network of NHS practitioners, managers and commissioners, exploring the practical impacts and potential of the research areas to provoke new ways of thinking and generate novel ideas, with the long-term goal of changing healthcare practices and driving research collaborations. Subjects have included racialised consciousness, use of language in the clinical care setting and using musical listening interventions in clinical practice.

We have also been looking at how to capture the researcher’s experience through the iStory approach.   You can see the link to the first example of this where the researcher’s experience from “Racialised Consciousness” is captured in immersive dialogue, animation and poetry. The researcher, Dr Lucienne Loh, Reader of English Literature in the Department of English at the University of Liverpool told her story of how the Provocations methodology was developed.   The short film and poems show this journey. We will be preparing more iStories with the other themes in the Provocations series.
