Rachel Walsh, Lead Research and Clinical Trials Pharmacist at Mersey Care NHS Foundation Trust, reflects on her experience with the NIHR CRN Early Career Researcher Development Pathway (ECRDP). The programme provided invaluable support as she navigated her new role, helping her build confidence in research, expand her professional network, and develop key leadership skills. Now, with the programme evolving through a collaboration between NHS R&D North West and Liverpool Health Partners, the LHP RDP brand-new edition is launching—building on past successes to support the next generation of researchers. Read on to learn how ECRP shaped Rachel’s journey and why she highly recommends it.
In July 2023, I completed the NIHR CRN Early Career Researcher Development Pathway (ECRDP), which has been invaluable as I transitioned into my role as Lead Research and Clinical Trials Pharmacist. The programme provided me with a deep understanding of the research landscape, the role of the NIHR, and the various organisations involved in research design, funding, and delivery. It pushed me out of my comfort zone, encouraging me to network with others, particularly reaching out to Trusts with established research activities. This led to valuable visits to clinical trial centres, including SLaM, the Liverpool Clinical Research Facility, and Alder Hey’s Institute in the Park. The programme sparked a renewed appreciation for networking and opened doors to future training opportunities.
One of the most valuable aspects was learning about Patient and Public Involvement and Engagement (PPIE) and how it shapes research design by highlighting issues and factors that may not be considered by healthcare professionals. The programme also emphasised the Vitae Researcher Development Framework (RDF), which helped me track my progress and reflect on the skills and qualities necessary to be a competent researcher.
The ECRDP gave me a greater understanding of my leadership qualities, particularly in conflict resolution and influencing others. This self-awareness has positively impacted my day-to-day practice, and the lessons I learned continue to guide me, even more than 18 months after completing the programme. I am grateful to have been part of Cohort 3 and continue to stay in touch with fellow participants, offering support, sharing ideas, and celebrating successes as we work towards improving patient care.
I highly recommend this programme to anyone interested in research. It provides a comprehensive overview of the drivers, policy context, and value of research in an accessible and engaging way.
