We are excited to announce a series of facilitated online group discussions on Energy Limiting Conditions (ELCs) with researchers from the University of Liverpool and Liverpool Hope University. Informed by their research and your practice, these discussions will explore ways to better support both patients and NHS workers with ELC. The ELC category covers a wide range of conditions in which people experience debilitating fatigue (for example, ME/CFS, fibromyalgia, Long Covid, neurological, musculoskeletal and autoimmune conditions, amongst others). These conditions leave people limited in how much they can do and for how long. Energy limitation and fatigue are difficult to measure, and research shows patients do not always feel well supported or understood in healthcare settings. The same applies to workers in employment. Our goal is to explore strategies for better understanding and supporting patients and care providers living with ELCs across the NHS.
Because big system wide changes take a long time to implement, we’re particularly interested in finding ideas for small immediate changes that might make a difference to people’s experiences. We’re not only interested in clinicians’ perspectives but the whole range of professions involved in the delivery of healthcare. The discussions will be guided by action learning principles and will last 1-2 hours (maximum 4-5 participants). Asynchronous opportunities will also be provided for people who cannot attend the meetings. You will have the opportunity to share your own knowledge and experience of ELCs, learn about the findings from the researchers’ projects, and explore ideas for change with other professionals. The research underpinning the discussion has been co-produced with people who have lived experience of ELCs. Together, we will explore new perspectives, develop innovative ideas, and identify actionable steps to implement. We will also invite you to continue working with us, in whatever way you can, to take some of those ideas and actions forward. We welcome anyone working in healthcare; whether you have an interest in ELCs, support patients with ELCs, shape systems and health care spaces that people with ELC use, or have an ELC yourself. We aim to provide a space where it feels safe to discuss your experiences and perceptions on this matter, learn more about research and explore ways to improve experiences of people with ELC. All contributions are important to us and we understand your time and energy might be limited. For more information about the underlying research project, please click here.
